Our Story

Street View of the frame shop.

Shirley Hunsberger is the owner and operator at Magnolia House Custom Picture Framing. She has always had a lifelong passion for the visual arts. Shirley was born in England and raised three daughters in the United States. When her youngest child began school, Shirley started working in picture framing.

Shirley soon launched her own business, calling herself The Framer. When her family relocated to Fuquay-Varina in 1994 she rebranded as Magnolia House. She initially ran her shop out of her (now former) home at 109 East Spring Street, the Ballentine-Spence House, a home that she helped put on the register of historic places. It is now a landmark in Fuquay’s own Historic District. In 2001 Shirley moved her business to its current location at 218 South Main Street and has been there ever since.

Shirley became a Master Certified Framer in 2007. And she has always supported local artists. She is one of the founders of the Fuquay-Varina Arts Council, and regularly hosts art shows in her shop. Magnolia House always has a gallery of local art on display.

Shirley helped develop the Fuquay-Varina Plein Air Paint Off, an annual spectator-friendly painting competition. It has been nationally recognized as a successful charity auction. She also uses her shop to teach art lessons for adults and children ages 13 +. Shirley is both proud and delighted to see how Fuquay has grown into a thriving community that supports the arts and values local businesses and we hope our story continues.
